China's President Xi Jinping has expressed a strong commitment to working with the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump's administration. This declaration was made during a meeting with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday. During their meeting, they discussed contentious issues such as cybercrime, trade, Taiwan, and Russia.
The meeting took place at the hotel in Lima, Peru, where President Xi was staying, as both leaders are in the city for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. This was the first meeting between Xi and Biden in seven months.
Xi told Biden that despite the recent U.S. presidential election, China's goal to maintain a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship with the U.S. remains unchanged. However, Xi also acknowledged the "ups and downs" in the bilateral relationship.
Xi emphasized to Biden that China is ready to maintain communication with the new U.S. administration, enhance cooperation, and work through differences.
Biden acknowledged that while the two leaders don't always agree, their discussions have been "frank" and "open."
The meeting occurred two months before Trump is set to take office. Trump has already pledged to impose a 60% tariff on Chinese imports as part of his "America First" trade policy. China has opposed such measures.
Trump is not stopping with tariffs; he is also planning to appoint hardline individuals on China-related issues to key positions in his administration. These include Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State and Congressman Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor.
Biden has attempted to ease tensions with China, but recently, Washington was angered by the leak of phone communications between a Chinese-related faction and U.S. presidential campaign officials. Additionally, the increasing pressure China is exerting on Taiwan and its support for Russia are causing concerns in Washington.
During the meeting, Biden also sought China's cooperation on North Korea. Washington is concerned about North Korea's deepening ties with Russia and the deployment of Russian troops in the Ukraine conflict.
